The Body Knows — Vol. 3 | Severine Sanctuary

You have probably noticed it in your own life, even if you never had language for it.
Some days, your body needs to move. To shake, sweat, push, breathe hard, feel your own strength. And afterward, something in you feels clearer... Lighter... Like a weight has actually left.
Other days, movement is the last thing your body wants. What it needs is stillness. Slowness. To be held rather than pushed. And when you finally allow that, the same thing happens; Something releases; Something settles.
Two completely different experiences. The same result: release.
This is not a contradiction. This is the body working exactly as it was designed to — through two distinct pathways, both essential, neither superior to the other.
The Body Speaks Two Languages
In somatic work, we call these two pathways yang and yin.
Not as aesthetic categories. Not as vibes. As two genuinely different physiological processes, held in two different types of tissue, requiring two different kinds of attention.
Yang tissue is your muscle. It is active, contractile, built for force and motion. It holds tension the way a fist holds a grip — through effort, through bracing, through the body's attempt to do something about a threat. Your psoas bracing against fear. Your shoulders rising to carry what felt like too much. Your jaw clenching around words that were never said.
Yang release happens through expansion and expression. Heat. Movement. Breath that builds before it empties. The muscle fibre lengthens, the held effort finally has somewhere to go, and what was gripped can finally open.
Yin tissue is different. This is your fascia, your ligaments, your tendons, the deep connective web that holds your joints and your very structure together. Yin tissue doesn't grip through effort — it holds through time. Through years of low-grade compression. Through the slow, quiet accumulation of things never fully processed, never fully felt, simply absorbed into the architecture of the body itself.
Yin release cannot be forced. It happens through stillness and surrender. Cold. Slowness. Sustained, patient pressure. You cannot muscle your way into a fascial release — you can only create enough safety, and enough time, for the tissue to finally soften on its own terms.
Why the Body Needs Both
Here is where most approaches to healing get it wrong: they pick one and call it the whole answer.
All yang, no yin — and you get a nervous system that knows only how to activate. Always doing, always moving, always discharging — but never truly landing. Burnout dressed up as discipline.
All yin, no yang — and you get a nervous system that knows only how to soften. Endless rest, endless stillness — but without the activation that says I am safe enough now to move forward. Collapse dressed up as calm.
The body was never meant to live in only one state. It was built to move between them — to charge and to rest, to grip and to release, to work and to be still — the way breath itself moves between inhale and exhale. Neither half of the breath is the "real" one. The breath is both, in rhythm.
This is the deeper truth underneath every somatic practice: healing is not a single direction. It is a rhythm you are learning to trust again.
The Same Discharge, Two Different Voices

The trembling that moved through its body after the chase was not random. It was the nervous system completing what it started — discharging the enormous survival energy that had nowhere to go in the moment of the threat itself.
Humans do this too. We just do it through more forms than a gazelle ever needs to.
Shaking and trembling are usually the most literal echo of that gazelle and they tend to arrive on the yang side of release. A body that has been bracing, holding, gripping in muscle finally gets permission to let the held charge move. The shake is not a malfunction. It is the exact mechanism Levine observed: energy that mobilised for survival, finally given a way out.
Tears can arrive from either side, but they carry a different quality depending on where they come from. Yang tears often come fast and hot , attached to something specific, something that finally found its exit after being clenched shut. Yin tears tend to arrive slower, and often surprise you like a quiet welling that has no clear story attached to it, surfacing after stillness has done its work on tissue that was never gripping, only holding, for a very long time.
Laughter is not always about something being funny. Polyvagal theory offers a useful lens here: laughter that erupts during an intense or overwhelming moment isn't about humour — it's the nervous system discharging a charge that has flooded past what it can hold, using whichever release route is available. In fact, laughter recruits many of the same physical mechanisms as crying or trembling — sharp exhalations, rapid muscle contractions, a sudden shift in breathing pattern. It is, physiologically, close kin to a shake or a sob — just moving through a different channel. Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory suggests the vagus nerve helps regulate this kind of arousal, with laughter acting as one route the body uses to shift out of a fight-or-flight state and back toward calm.
On the yang side, this shows up as sudden, almost involuntary laughter breaking out during activation — the charge finding its fastest possible exit while the body is still mobilised. On the yin side, it tends to arrive after — once stillness has already done its work, and the nervous system, now registering safety, lets go through a softer, slower laugh. Same mechanism, same nervous system doing exactly what it's built to do — just arriving at a different point in the release.
None of these responses mean the same thing every time, and none of them need to be interpreted to be valid. A trembling leg, a sudden tear, a laugh that comes from nowhere — these are not symptoms to explain. They are the body, mid-sentence, finally being allowed to finish what it was saying.
The gazelle does not analyse its own trembling. It simply lets it move, and then it grazes again.
This is the invitation, every time: not to understand the release, but to let it happen.
What This Looks Like in Practice
A yang release might look like trembling after an intense movement practice, heat rising through the body, a sound escaping mid-session that you didn't plan and couldn't have faked.
A yin release is quieter, and often slower to arrive. It might be the unexpected wave surfacing twenty minutes into a still, cold, or deeply supported practice — long after the mind has stopped trying to control the outcome. It might simply be the exhale that finally goes all the way down, for the first time in longer than you can remember.
Neither is more valid than the other. Neither is the "real" work. They are two doors into the same room.
Learning to Ask the Body What It Needs
The mistake is assuming you already know which one you need.
Sometimes what looks like needing to push harder is actually a nervous system asking to finally be still. Sometimes what looks like needing rest is actually a body that has been collapsed for so long it has forgotten what its own strength feels like.
This is why somatic work is never a formula. It is a practice of asking — session by session, sometimes moment by moment — what does this body actually need right now to complete what it is holding?
Sometimes the answer is fire. Sometimes it is stillness. The work is not choosing a side.
The work is learning to trust the rhythm.
